Wexford Volunteer Fire Company

Valerie Wittmer

FireFighter

As a fourth generation firefighter, the fire service has been a considerable part of my family life and earliest memories. My uncle is a member of a neighboring fire service, and formerly, my sister who became a member of Wexford before relocating after college. That is the common bond between all of us. Most of us share a sibling, a parent, or another member of the family in company. And for those who do not, the friendship that is forged amongst us all creates a family atmosphere. It is not uncommon to be labeled a family member to those who you work side by side at W.V.F.C.

I was raised less than a mile from Wexford's main station, where I would often accompany my father (known to some of the firefighters as "Dad") to various company functions. Upon turning fourteen, I joined the Wexford Volunteer Fire Company in November of 1994, entering in the Junior Program. Although I have moved to the outskirts of the Wexford area, I am still an active structural firefighter and mainly respond from our substation on Babcock Boulevard.

My other hobbies are mostly creative: including most forms of art, cooking, decorating, and sharing the outdoors with my black lab. I attended Carnegie Mellon University’s pre-college program for Fine Arts. Like most of our firefighters, my post high-school education varied from firefighting. At La Roche College I earned a Bachelor of Science in Graphics, Design, and Communication. I have experience as an executive assistant and an assistant market director. Over the years I have obtained firefighter related training certificates such as: The Essentials of Firefighting, Structural Burn, and Firefighter Safety & Survival.

For over 16 years, I not only enjoy continuing my family tradition in firefighting, but love having the opportunity to be a part of the diverse personalities, skill sets, and backgrounds of our various members who come together for a common good and to serve our community. As our company has grown, we continue to become a close knit family, which I am proud to be a part of.
