Fire Sprinkler Controls Commercial Building Fire

On Friday, April 10, crews responded to a water flow alarm from the 5000 building of the Stonewood commercial buildings in Pine Township. 228 Engine 1 arrived on the scene to find reported smoke and water flowing out of the third-floor men’s restroom. 228 Engines 1 and 2 worked to shut off the sprinkler water supply once the fire was confirmed extinguished and 228 Truck worked to ventilate and perform salvage duties. 228 Chief contacted the Allegheny County Fire Marshall to make a report.

Thankfully these calls don’t come too often, but this fire really shows two things:

1. Sprinklers stop fires and save lives. If this had been let to develop into a larger fire both the occupants and firefighters would have been put at great risk.

2. Candles can be very dangerous. This fire was reportedly started from a candle left unattended in the restroom.
